Half Time – League 2
Pre-Season League 2 Advice
NORTHAMPTON win outright @ 14/1 (Ladbrokes)
CHESTERFIELD win outright @ 16/1 (SkyBet)
Northampton, relegated from League 1 last year, have made a very disappointing start to this years campaign and do not look like they will be having any say in who will be taking the League 2 crown. After a very poor start the Cobblers sacked manager Stuart Gray and installed club legend Ian Sampson which led to them actually picking up some very promising results and looked to be on their way back up the table. However in recent weeks things seem to have turned sour and despite the fact they always seem to come back from losing positions they are not picking up enough wins.
Chesterfield on the other hand, are sitting in a very handy position in 7th and although the 9 points separating them from the top may look like a mammoth task anything can happen in this league and I still fully expect them to be challenging come the end of the season. If the Spireites can mirror their home onto their away form they have every chance.
ALDERSHOT to be relegated @ 6/1 (general)
GRIMSBY to be relegated @ 10/1 (Coral)
Aldershot seem to be one of the ‘shock’ teams in League 2 this season and are currently on a eight game unbeaten run and sit 6th. They have recorded some cracking results of late none more impressive than the 5-2 win away at Dagenham and Redbridge. I think we can forget about them being relegated. However we do look to be in a great position with our 10/1 shot Grimsby who sit second bottom 4 point adrift of safety. It is fairly tight above them so it is very plausible a team may drop down but looking at the majority of clubs that look down at the Mariners , they all look to have a team that could go on a positive run, where Grimsby don’t. A loss to Bath City in the cup can only have a detrimental effect and I would be very surprised if they escape the drop to non-league.
ANDY BISHOP top scorer @ 28/1 (SkyBet)
JOHN O’FLYNN top scorer @ 33/1 (general)
Andy Bishop, sadly, suffered a double hernia two weeks before the start of the season which has ruled him out for the majority of the season and he has only started two games. It’s a big disappointment as Andy is a proven goalscorer at this level and looked great value at 28/1.
John O’Flynn has had moderate success so far this season with 6 goals but we are going to need a surge after Christmas to see him shoot up the table as the leader sits with 14 goals. Barnet have dropped off the pace in recent weeks so it may be tough for John to find those goals.
Rest of the season
A team that really takes my fancy at this stage of the season are Morecambe. A high number of draws at the start of the season meant that Morecombe looked to be in real trouble when languishing near the foot of the table. They were playing good football and reports would suggest they had the better of a high number of games but could not grab that much needed win. However, they have won their last 6 league games and have actually only lost 4 games all season. They really look to be the team on the up and I think the 8/1 (General) on offer for them to be promoted is too tempting.
