Golf – Abu Dhabi Championships Preview

Wed, Jan 20, 2010

Xtrends

The European Tour sees its first real star line up this week at the Abu Dhabi Championships. The relatively new event has seen Paul Casey succeed two of the last three years and German Martin Kaymer notching a win in between.

I will start the update with the young German Kaymer. Martin had a very successful 2009 and showcased himself to be a very talented golfer with an extremely bright future. He recorded two wins in 2009 and two second place finishes, one at the corresponding event last year when finishing one shot behind Paul Casey. He will want to start 2010 with a bang and has the game to contest at the top once again this week and must have his sights on The Race To Dubai after finishing third last year.

Martin Kaymer – 14/1 (General)

In 2009, two Italian brothers produced some what of a shock by beating off tough, experienced opposition to win the World Cup. One of those brothers, Francesco Molinari enjoyed a successful 2009 with seven top ten finishes which included this event last year. The success from the World Cup alone will only have increased the young Italians confidence and I expect him to come here this week believing he will win. He has shown he has what it takes to go close here.

Francesco Molinari – Each-Way – 45/1 (Boylesports, Stan James)

Geoff Ogilvy always seems to start the season strongly and after winning on the US Tour in Hawaii the Australian starts another season in high spirits. He has shown in the past he likes playing on the European Tour and his inclusion this week has only reiterated that. We have some class players taking part this week but not many come better than major winner Ogilvy. His putter, which seemed to be a problem nearer the end of the season in 2009, looked very hot and that could be the making of back-to-back successes.

Geoff Ogilvy – 12/1 (General)

The final player to make my shortlist is a young Spaniard who has become known for his fearless game and long hitting. Alvaro Quiros also made a name for himself in 2009 with his long drives and a famous win at the Qatar Masters where he beat off a star studied field to claim his third victory on tour. He has shown himself to be a very talented individual and has the potential to go very far in the game, he finished 26th here last year which is a good basis to build from and if he can get straight into the swing of things birdies will be easy to come by.

Alvaro Quiros – Each-Way – 66/1 (Paddy Power)
