Golf – The Farmers Championship Preview

Wed, Jan 27, 2010

Xtrends

Hopefully some of you backed Bill Haas (who actually has some strong trends here this week) last week at 100/1 so you have some pennies in your pocket for the Farmers Championship this week which sees Phil Mickelson make his seasonal debut.

I start with Phil in this preview as he is by far and away the best player in the field and I cannot oppose him. We all know about Phil’s quality and even when Tiger is in the field he is a great challenger, however, he will realise without Tiger this could be a massive year for him and he will want to start his season strongly. Not only is he the best player, the stats are in his favour, the event is in his home town and he has won at Torrey Pines three times. He finished last year strongly with back-to-back wins and in truth he wouldn’t have to use too many gears to pick up another success.

Bettrends Advice

Phil Mickelson – 13/2 (William Hill, Bet 365)

Although he has let us down already this season I am going to side with the little Englishman Luke Donald once more. Luke has a fantastic record here with four top 10’s, two 2nd place finishes (2004, 2005) and a 7th place finish last year. Luke knows he is good enough to win an event like this so confidence shouldn’t be a problem. Just like Bill Haas last week he must be disappointed with his most recent performance and he will be desperate to rectify that this week. At 40/1 he is worth an each-way chance.

Luke Donald – Each-Way – 40/1 (Stan James)

John Rollins was just pipped at the post by Nick Watney here last year when he shot a frustrating 74 on the Sunday. However, it is his current form that interests me, in his two starts this year John has amassed two top 15 finishes (top 10 in first event of year). In his last round at the Sony Open he shot a 65 so he must come here with fresh memories of playing good golf and confidence must be at a high. Form means a lot in golf and so looking at the players around him in the betting he seems a good price.

Bettrends Advice

John Rollins – Each-Way – 35/1 (Bet365, Stan James)

If I am going to advise John Rollins because of his current form then Ryan Moore has to feature as well. He has started two events this year and has yet to finish outside the top 10. He finished only 5 behind Geoff Ogilvy in the SBS and shot five rounds in the 60’s at the Bob Hope. Scoring wont be a problem for him and he will want to build on his good start to the year and use his current form to grab a win. He shot a 68 here on the south course last year so he knows what it takes. His price looks there for the taking.

Ryan Moore – Each-Way – 28/1 (General)
