Folkestone – Wednesday, March 3rd
HE’S ON HIS WAY – Won three Points in Ireland up to ’06 but never able to win under Rules, despite some creditable efforts in decent company; campaigned mainly over 3m in his time so not certain to be suited by this trip although the ground shouldn’t be a problem. Just over a length behind Master Alf on his comeback at Detling, both should improve for the run; each-way claims.
HIGH TOBY – Lightly raced and poor under Rules but has found his level in Points, winning a Godstone Maiden on good last season, and two out of three this term including a Club race at the same track. On the upgrade but overall profile is still questionable and yet to prove that he handles testing ground.
MAGNUS VERITAS – Suited by soft ground but an ultimately disappointing type these days; finished a poor last in his Members at Godstone on his comeback and can’t be seriously fancied at present. Unraced under Rules for four years.
MASTER ALF – Looked a thorough stayer when placed over 3m4f at Fontwell a couple of years ago so this trip clearly a concern; however, a most competent Pointer who is rarely out of the frame and typically held on gamely to win a Detling Club race on his comeback (He’s On His Way a close-up fourth). Trip clearly on the sharp side but ground ideal and this likeable character is clearly a major player in a poor contest.
ONE TO NOTE – Not disgraced during a light campaign although best performances notably came on decent ground. Not out of the first two in four completed Points in Wales last season, including when successful in a fast time at Trecoed; form is weak, though and has changed hands since and his performances in South Eastern Points this term leave a lot to be desired; well held by High Toby on recent Godstone form.
OSCAR D’ANGRON – Non-runner
PENNY DOC – Multiple winner in Ireland and finished runner-up twice in Hunter Chases (goes well on testing ground), but only showed ordinary form when a distant second on his GB debut. Ran well for a long way in a fair renewal of the ‘Walrus’ at Haydock but was exhausted at the finish; drop in trip may suit but it remains to be seen how much that effort took out of him. Leading chance in a much weaker race if he is still 100%, though.
SYKEE SAVAGE – Moderate performer in Ireland and generally of a similar level in this country despite winning in Open company last season (also 25L fourth of nine finishers to Cappa Bleu). Not at his best so far this season but stable has seen a dramatic upturn in fortunes recently so he certainly wouldn’t be without a chance on all known form.
WE’RE CONFUSED – Non-runner.
SUPER KAY – Irish Maiden winner on soft and placed under Rules there on firm. Never in the hunt when fourth in a 2m2f Hunter Chase at Stratford on her debut for the current yard and subsequently disappeared until resurfacing to finish second of three in her Members (ahead of Magnus Veritas). Entitled to come on significantly for the run but still doubtful as to how much ability she retains. Trip/ground should suit.
Conclusion – A weak race which won’t take a lot of winning. Penny Doc has a leading chance but had a very hard race recently, which could leave the door open for the ultra-reliable Master Alf, who has plenty going for him in this company. He’s On His Way shouldn’t be far behind, but don’t rule out a return to form for Sykee Savage.
