Golf – Free Transitions Championship Preview
Firstly, let me apologise for the lack of updates the last few weeks. The lead up to Cheltenham is fairly busy but I’m glad to say we get back into the flow here with the Transitions which is only a number of weeks away from the Masters.

I start this week’s update with Brandt Snedeker at a juicy price of 66/1. Brandt has had a cracking start to the season with no missed cuts, two top tens and not finishing outside the top 50 once. Last year will be one to forget for Brandt as far as the Transitions goes and my view is he will be trying hard to rectify that missed cut. I really like players in form that come to events that they disappointed in the year before. Birdies are hard to come by at this beast of a course and sitting 13th in both birdie average and scoring average puts our selection in good stead. His putting has also been solid sitting 8th with an average of 27.84 ppr and second in putting average. He may need to improve his greens in regulation slightly but that’s a good possibility with the form he is in.

Looking at the prices, in my book Jim Furyk is over priced at 30/1. I’ll be the first to agree Vijay Singh is in good form at the minute but I don’t see a good enough reason why he is up to 10 points better off than Jim in the betting. In his three starts in strokeplay events Jim has had good finishes without being spectacular. His finish T52 last year may look weak but he started the week with a 65 only for his putting to go cold. If he can replicate that form for at least two days then he will be in the top 5, easily. His stats so far this year aren’t great but his driving accuracy and putts per round are strong. Jim is going to be working hard to get into form for the Masters and there is no better time than on this challenging course. I expect a big week.

The third player to make my shortlist is Charles Howell III. Charles was runner up here last year and has been in good form so far this year. One missed cut was saddled by three top tens and three top twenty finishes. Importantly for this course, Charles was 7th in greens in regulation and putting last year and if he brings that form to the course again he will be tough to beat. So far this year he is 30th for greens in regulation and 6th in scoring average which looks a great advantage here. There are five par 3’s here so his stat of 31st in par 3 performance on tour looks a great asset. If he starts well I expect him to challenge.
