Make sure to check back tomorrow for the LIVE! report from Day 4.
- 4:53 PM: Paul Jones Signing off now and looking forward to the big head to head tomorrow – kauto and cooldine
- 4:52 PM: Paul Jones A better day for the trend horses today which was needed. Slight loss on the ante post but we can not lose on that now
- 4:51 PM: bettrends.co.uk Quick note to Andrew Blagden – don’t have a heart attack – see you back here tomorrow God willing
- 4:50 PM: bettrends.co.uk So another day done – we’ll leave PJ to round it up…
- 4:48 PM: bettrends.co.uk Great finish – one for the McCain yard; Faasel nearly got there PJ!
- 4:46 PM: bettrends.co.uk Here comes Faasel
- 4:39 PM: bettrends.co.uk The bookies offer odds of 11-10 Channel 4’s Gold Cup coverage peaks at over 2,100,001, 6-4 that the figure is slightly up on last year, 1,700,001 to 2,100,000, and 3-1 that just 1,700,000 or less tune-in.
- 4:39 PM: bettrends.co.uk William Hill have opened betting on how many people will tune into Channel 4 to watch the epic Cheltenham Gold Cup clash between Kauto Star and Denman
- 4:37 PM: bettrends.co.uk Plenty of money for Ma Yahab – into 14s from opening 25s
- 4:36 PM: bettrends.co.uk Boychuk into 10s from 16s – the Hobbs factor is kicking in
- 4:28 PM: bettrends.co.uk Jackpot – not won. £269605 rollover at Cheltenham tomorrow!
- 4:27 PM: Paul Jones Throw freds benefit in as well. Shillingstone very strong neck. Faasel looks immaculate and pipe snr loved this race. Could he give them a treble on the day? Stranger things
- 4:25 PM: Paul Jones He may have been off for 524 days but Burren Legend looks very well as does Kia Kaha
- 4:24 PM: Paul Jones Think boychuk has to run well given form of yard, consistent course form figures and ground close to how he loves it. Cannot fault his appearance
- 4:21 PM: Paul Jones First steady rain of the meeting falling
- 4:21 PM: Paul Jones Chamirey must be a good horse to get placed the way King’s horses have gone
- 4:21 PM: bettrends.co.uk Time for one more email, from Andrew Blagden, who quite rightly points out that team-Hobbs are on fire: “Another placed effort at big odds – From Dawn To Dusk”
- 4:19 PM: bettrends.co.uk Not quite in the league of the one they did when Moscow Flyer fell in the Queen Mother a few year’s back to Feeder’s ‘Forget About Tomorrow’
- 4:16 PM: bettrends.co.uk Whatever you think about C4, they do sum up the day fairly well to a tune!!
- 4:15 PM: bettrends.co.uk Think we’ll settle for purely ‘driven’.
- 4:14 PM: bettrends.co.uk McCoy: Possessed or bionic – you decide…
- 4:13 PM: Paul Jones Dermot Weld reports Elegant Concorde badly hurt in bumper and Prince Erik to return to the flat
- 4:11 PM: Paul Jones Sunnyhillboy still in grand annual tomorrow. I wonder if they might be tempted? Probably won but for mistake down the back
- 4:11 PM: bettrends.co.uk So, onto the last – a 24-runner 3m1f chase for amateur riders….perfect!
- 4:09 PM: bettrends.co.uk Think that answers your question Derek!!
- 4:09 PM: Paul Jones I would not want to be Alan King’s cat, that’s for sure
- 4:08 PM: bettrends.co.uk Good on David Johnson for sticking with the lad.
- 4:08 PM: Paul Jones Another nigh on impossible to find winner in the Plate. Jumped like a drain earlier in the season. Good old mister mcgoldrick clung on for fourth
- 4:06 PM: bettrends.co.uk McCoy on his feet – but looking battered and bruised. I’ll remember this when I think I’ve had a hard day at the office!
- 4:05 PM: bettrends.co.uk Another for the Pipe team – Danny Cook this time
- 4:04 PM: bettrends.co.uk McCoy on the deck again!!

- 3:58 PM: bettrends.co.uk Sunnyhillboy as short as 6s with VC Bet & Boylesports
- 3:56 PM: bettrends.co.uk PJ – are we giving up on Alan King then?- asks Derek Lonsdale on the email.
- 3:54 PM: bettrends.co.uk Tarotino steady on 16s
- 3:53 PM: bettrends.co.uk Song of Songs out to 11s from 7s
- 3:52 PM: Paul Jones Been keen on song of songs and tarotino for this race since the entries but King yard really need to up their game this week. Now would be a good time!
- 3:50 PM: Paul Jones Taken by song of songs and watch my back
- 3:50 PM: bettrends.co.uk Changing Course (IRE)

- 3:33 PM: bettrends.co.uk Albertas Run in to as short as 16/1 for the Grand National after winning Ryanair Chase.
- 3:30 PM: Paul Jones Good result for the ante post followers with the second ew at 25s and our 4/1 for big bucks in order of merit must be odds on now
- 3:30 PM: bettrends.co.uk Finally a proper Cheltenham cheer around the winner’s enclosure!!
- 3:28 PM: Paul Jones Tidal bay reverted to old doggy ways
- 3:28 PM: Paul Jones What a brilliant horse. And what a blinder time for rupert ran
- 3:16 PM: Paul Jones Summing up, in terms of good looks big bucks’ magnificence stands out but tidal bay trained to the minute so just paddock pick
- 3:16 PM: bettrends.co.uk Big Buck’s now 5/6 – the bookies want him!

- 3:01 PM: Paul Jones Big Buck’s looks magnificent
- 3:01 PM: Paul Jones

- 3:00 PM: bettrends.co.uk The Ryanair placings remain unaltered.
- 2:49 PM: bettrends.co.uk Just a bit of ‘race riding’ according to Francome – perfectly acceptable
- 2:49 PM: Paul Jones Thought jack the giant ran well for long way. He is having a good blow so could be interesting at Aintree
- 2:47 PM: bettrends.co.uk Stewards enquiry!!
- 2:46 PM: Paul Jones Bit deflated after that. Mullins unlikely to be happy with Ruby for cutting up J Y Vole
- 2:46 PM: bettrends.co.uk Drying ground surely helped
- 2:43 PM: bettrends.co.uk McCoy steals it????
- 2:43 PM: bettrends.co.uk Paddy Flood gone
- 2:39 PM: bettrends.co.uk Tranquil Sea friendless on the Exchanges
- 2:37 PM: Paul Jones Tranquil Sea looked well but heavy topped so questionable if as effective on better ground
- 2:33 PM: Paul Jones Voy Por the best any King horse looked this week and Jack The Giant pick of the Henderson trio
- 2:31 PM: Paul Jones Planet of sound the pick of paddock – Hobbs again. What is he feeding them?
- 2:31 PM: bettrends.co.uk Obviously a Newcastle United fan – c’mon, the horses please!!!
- 2:30 PM: bettrends.co.uk C’mon C4 concentrate on the horses – leave the fashion to the BBC!
- 2:26 PM: Paul Jones Poquelin first in. Small but well made and looks as well as Sanctuaire yesterday in terms of looseness. Nicholls thinks could be Gold Cup horse next year but surely lacks scope for that. This is a different matter.
- 2:23 PM: bettrends.co.uk Great quote from the speechless Hadden Frost having scored his first Festival win on Buena Vista: “dream of this all your life & can’t think what to say”.
- 2:22 PM: Paul Jones Hobbs and O’Grady big anti Denman in earlier interviews

- 2:06 PM: bettrends.co.uk Yesterday we asked for your Naps for the day, but today we want to know your thoughts on the WORLD HURDLE.
Will BIG BUCKS dominate? Or will he bottle it?
E-mail your thoughts to us on bettrends@googlemail.com - 2:04 PM: bettrends.co.uk Tongue tie & step up in trip were the key to Copper Bleu’s success, says Richard Johnson.
- 2:01 PM: bettrends.co.uk Pedigree note: After Copper Bleu’s win, Pistolet Bleu joins Oscar and King’s Theatre in having 2 winners at this years Festival .
- 2:00 PM: Paul Jones Boulavouge looked well then started to sweat up
- 1:59 PM: Paul Jones Nothing earth shattering here. Alfie Sherrin paddock pick but Smoking Aces and Kayf Aramis the fittest. Alfie similar type to Diamond Harry
- 1:56 PM: Paul Jones Silk Affair – is this the ultimate coup?
- 1:56 PM: bettrends.co.uk Dickie Johnson reports ground as riding GOOD all round.
- 1:53 PM: Paul Jones Smoking Aces very fit and ready
- 1:51 PM: Paul Jones Starting to spot with rain
- 1:50 PM: Paul Jones On subject of Fair Along I am told when interviewed in paddock Hobbs said he was “bonkers” price. I have taken 16s to place and 40s without fav in anticipation of him looking Menorah/Copper Bleu fit
- 1:50 PM: bettrends.co.uk Fair Along currently 100/1 – we’ve had a small bit e/w – PJ????
- 1:46 PM: bettrends.co.uk If you’re looking for a live stream of Cheltenham William Hill’s live stream is getting good reviews.
- 1:45 PM: bettrends.co.uk More thoughts on the World Hurdle by email – Simondo reckons: Big Bucks is a cert, but Time for Rupert will be placed and Sentry Duty will travel best but not finish job.
- 1:43 PM: bettrends.co.uk Big thanks from Kevin Kelly to you PJ – he had that thanks to your keen eye!
- 1:40 PM: bettrends.co.uk NON-RUNNER (tomorrow): CHELTENHAM March 19th, 2010
1:30 THE JCB TRIUMPH HURDLE RACE (CLASS 1)
number 6, Bob’s Legend (IRE) is a Non Runner. - 1:38 PM: Paul Jones Was told earlier today that fair along is the fittest horse in the yard!!! What price is he??? The way they are going he could run a screamer
- 1:36 PM: Paul Jones These Hobbs horses have all looked hard fit every day
- 1:36 PM: bettrends.co.uk Another one for the Hobbs team – certianly was “Menorah fit”
- 1:34 PM: bettrends.co.uk O’Regan hits the deck as well.
- 1:33 PM: bettrends.co.uk Tizzard gone too!
- 1:33 PM: bettrends.co.uk McCoy fell at the first, looked nasty but he’s up on his feet.
- 1:21 PM: Paul Jones Awesome George a pony compared to these. The midnight club looks plain
- 1:19 PM: Paul Jones China rock starting to sweat. Copper Bleu looks Menorah fit.
- 1:18 PM: Paul Jones In terms of condition two big priced horses stand out they being working title and sevennis my number. Also positive for tanks for that.
- 1:17 PM: bettrends.co.uk Alan King insists there is not much to separate Katchit and Karabak who both go for today’s World Hurdle.
- 1:07 PM: bettrends.co.uk NON-RUNNER:
5:15 THE JOHNNY HENDERSON GRAND ANNUAL STEEPLE CHASE CHALLENGE CUP (HANDICAP) (CLASS 1)
number 17, Leo’s Lucky Star (USA) is a Non Runner (Self Cert (Bad Scope)). - 12:58 PM: bettrends.co.uk Great – the expert cometh – no more random mutterings from me!!
- 12:57 PM: Paul Jones Ok finished tomorrows analysis. Let’s now see what we can find out
- 12:55 PM: bettrends.co.uk New emailer, Peter Watson from Norwich, has a sneaky feeling about Jack The Giant in the Ryanair. Be interesting to see how PJ thinks he is in the paddock.
- 12:52 PM: bettrends.co.uk It’s all over the web – the sign will seemingly become a permanent fixture!!! Can’t see that pleasing the Cheltenham management or the competition!
- 12:46 PM: bettrends.co.uk Paddy Power sign stats:
• 270 feet long (82 metres) • 50 feet high (15 metres) • Almost 100 tones in total • 60 man build crew • 3 years in the making • Over 1000 man hours to design and build • Landmarks dwarfed by the Paddy Power sign:
• At over 270ft wide that’s longer than the world’s largest free-standing billboard in Manila, Philippines (160ft)
• Taller and bigger than the Hollywood sign (45ft by 200ft)
• Longer than the famous Cerne Abbas Giant in Dorset (180ft)
• At over 50ft high that’s taller than three double-decker London buses stacked on top of each other - 12:44 PM: bettrends.co.uk News from Simon Claisse, Clerk of the Course: ” We are racing on the new course for the first time today and the last hurdle is 60 yards in front of where it is normally sited at the festival hence there will be a shorter run in, as there was onTuesday and Wednesday on the old course.”
- 12:43 PM: Paul Jones It is slower ground today but sunny so reckon could dry out by the Plate and Kim Muir late afternoon
- 12:41 PM: bettrends.co.uk It actually had the subject line: PJ is the man, but don’t want you to get big headed or anything – so left that bit out!
- 12:35 PM: bettrends.co.uk PJ – looks liked you rescued a few souls yesterday; just had this email from Wayne Wigley: “Thanks to Paul, Sanctuaire bailed the whole pub out yesterday!
Reckon he will fire in a couple today and I’m already big on Tarotino thanks to his Ante-post service.” - 12:32 PM: bettrends.co.uk Yeah – pure genius – they want to make it a permanent fixture but they say they can’t get hold of the town planners. Funny that, as the town planners are trying to get hold of them, but can’t, as the sign contravene’s planning laws!
- 12:26 PM: Paul Jones Qaspal misses out in the Martin Pipe so no Paddy Power bonus. Speaking of PP, you could see their lit up sign on Cleeve Hill for miles. Genius.
- 12:24 PM: bettrends.co.uk Still no non-runners or jockey changes to report!
- 12:23 PM: bettrends.co.uk No, nay, never!!!
- 12:21 PM: Paul Jones God I hate The Wild Rover! Especially when I am trying to finish tomorrows trends copy
- 12:10 PM: bettrends.co.uk SHOCKER? Ruby Walsh has opted to ride Free World over stablemate Tataniano in the Grand Annual tomorrow.
- 12:03 PM: bettrends.co.uk Confidence is high in The Betchworth Kid’s camp ahead of tomorrow’s Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle.
- 11:59 AM: Paul Jones Are they really going to run Silk Affair again 24 hrs after the Coral Cup? Interesting if they do as very shrewd connections. Don’t tell me it was a sneaky ploy to get a bigger price for the Pertemps Final. I would not put it beyond them and must confess an e-w ante post interest non runner no bet
- 11:52 AM: bettrends.co.uk Weapon’s Amnesty is just 8-1 with the sponsors for next year’s totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup.
- 11:49 AM: Paul Jones Interesting to read Nicholls tried to tell Twist Magic’s owners he did not like Cheltenham as everything I heard him say was that he had a great chance
- 11:35 AM: bettrends.co.uk Seemingly Davy Russell was not so bullish about Carlito Brigante’s chances at a recent Dublin Preview evening!! (thanks David).
- 11:29 AM: bettrends.co.uk Market mover – Paddy Power! : “Shares in Paddy Power were up 1% to €23.95 as the Cheltenham racing festival is proving a be a successful event for bookmakers.”
- 11:24 AM: bettrends.co.uk Latest Festival market movers on Betfair:

14:40: Scotsirish 38.00 in to 28.00, JY Vole 26.00 out to 34.00
15:20: Tidal Bay 8.00 out to 9.40, Lie Forrit 55.00 out to 85.00, Ebadiyan 260.00 in to 150.00

16:40: Galant Nuit 12.50 in to 10.00, Finger Onthe Pulse 15.50 out to 26.00, Hello Bud 42.00 in to 22.00 - 11:19 AM: bettrends.co.uk News from Twister on Imperial Commander just in from the P.A.:
“He’s in really good nick and I’m very happy with him. He got within a whisker of beating Kauto Star at Haydock. I couldn’t be happier and I’m really looking forward to it. He certainly will have improved from Haydock. That was his first run of the season and he’s a big burly horse. He’s an awful lot fitter now and he’s really lean and mean and keen. The trip is not a problem, he stays forever. We’ll be riding our own race but we certainly will be up there with them. Three out at Haydock he had Kauto beatbut he made a mistake there that turned the whole thing into a battle.”
“He has a high cruising speed and can quicken. I don’t think we’re worried about tactics. He’s won four out of five over fences at Cheltenham and was wrong the only time he was beaten there. He damaged a hock and didn’t run for nearly a year. Otherwise without that he’d have been unbeaten there.”
- 11:13 AM: bettrends.co.uk Davy Russell bullish about his chances on Gordon Elliott’s Carlito Brigante in the JCB Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham tomorrow.
- 11:07 AM: bettrends.co.uk Roulez Cool heads a max field of 24 for tomorrow’s Foxhunters
- 11:04 AM: bettrends.co.uk Qaspal will not chase Paddy Power’s £75k bonus for winning the Imperial Cup and any race at the Festival after missing the cut for both the County Hurdle & Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Hurdle tomorrow.
- 10:57 AM: bettrends.co.uk Paul Nicholls has labelled Kauto Star “lethal” as Clive Smith’s 10-year-old bids to cement his place among the National Hunt legends in tomorrow’s totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup. (courtesy P.A.)
- 10:56 AM: bettrends.co.uk Very few equine athletes have deserved the right to be ranked alongside Arkle, but owner Clive Smith believes Kauto Star is not far behind the colossus as he tries for a third totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup success. (courtesy of P.A.)
- 10:52 AM: bettrends.co.uk Pedigree note: Tranquil Sea is by Sea Raven, a stallion who left Ireland to stand in Barbados. Not a bad job if you can get it!
- 10:45 AM: bettrends.co.uk On the email from Martin Dixon: Powerstation is massive and at 40-1 is a good bet for a place in the Stayers hurdle.
- 10:34 AM: Paul Jones It’s perfect jumping ground basically but on the chase course if I was a trainer I would be telling my jockey not to move from the inside rail
- 10:30 AM: bettrends.co.uk Latest from the Findlay camp: “My wish is that Denman turns up and puts in a great performance. If he turns up and gets beat two or three lengths by Kauto Star, then I will be thrilled.”
- 10:22 AM: Paul Jones Might be an angle on in running betting here as good ground right up agianst the rail from top of hill to home turn. Ruby usually scrapes the paint on Poquelin
- 10:19 AM: bettrends.co.uk Quel Esprit to go again tomorrow in Albert Bartlett Novice’s Hurdle after falling yesterday in Neptune Investment Management Novices’ Hurdle.
- 10:18 AM: Paul Jones Watered last night and definitely more give in the straight where good to soft. Just heading into country.
- 10:06 AM: bettrends.co.uk Andrew McNamara does not think the Cheltenham ground will be a problem for Ryanair Chase hopeful Tranquil Sea.
- 10:02 AM: bettrends.co.uk Pricewise followers seem to be playing up yesterday’s winning by lumping on China Rock in the Jewson Handicap Chase as Ladbrokes report an early move for Tom Segal’s selection China Rock (9/1 from 10′s). In the same race
Rivaliste is 6′s from 7′s. They’ve also seen support for Karabak in World Hurdle – 8′s from 9′s, and in the Byrne Group Plate Sunyhillboy is 8′s from 9′s. - 9:53 AM: bettrends.co.uk Pedigree pointer-conditions may not be ideal for The Hollinwell, his brother Sherwoods Folly relishes soft ground and 3m plus – thanks to @bloodstock_al for these – www.twitter.com
- 9:52 AM: bettrends.co.uk Pedigree pointer-Othermix is half-brother to last year’s Grand Annual winner Oh Crick who acts well on decent ground and at Cheltenham.
- 9:51 AM: bettrends.co.uk Pedigree Pointer-as an Old Vic half-brother to Roll Along, Smoking Aces should relish today’s longer trip in the Pertemps.
- 9:38 AM: bettrends.co.uk ITALIAN – after all that he sold us a dummy……let us know how the course is walking!
- 9:36 AM: Paul Jones Was driving to the course! Italian in the end. Just about to walk course. Banker today…..tarotino ew 16s massive
- 9:26 AM: bettrends.co.uk PJ’s gone a little quiet – must be tucking into his fry up! Andrew Blagden wants to know what your nap of the day is after yesterday’s gem of Sanctuaire?
- 9:25 AM: bettrends.co.uk Quadpot dividend of £233.60 to a £1 stake at Cheltenham yesterday!
- 9:24 AM: bettrends.co.uk Totetrifecta beat Tricast in 5 out of 7 races at Cheltenham yesterday.
- 9:22 AM: bettrends.co.uk First emailer of the day is Kevin Kelly who is hoping for a big Alan King day via the ante posts. He has VPU and Katchit (w/o BB) both @ 16s in e/w doubles…… but he is more concerned with the question that’s on everyone’s lips (and for which we still have no answer) – PJ, was it Chinese or Curry???
- 9:18 AM: bettrends.co.uk After a steady start to the Festival, totepool turnover on Wednesday was up a whopping 12% at £2,459,037 compared to £2,196,272 on the corresponding day last year.
There was also good news for anyone who backed the winner of totepool’s Price Promise race of the day – the Coral Cup – as Spirit River returned £19.30 to a £1 stake which was £4.30 more than the returned SP of 14/1. Had the winner paid returned less, then totepool would have matched the SP.
To cap off a great day for any punter lucky enough to back a winner on a day of shocks, totewin also beat the SP in all seven races this afternoon at Cheltenham. A £10 totewin bet on all six winners would have paid £1375 compared to £1060 at SP – a total of £315 more.
The totejackpot was not won for the second successive day which means there is a bumper rollover of £184,940 going on to the penultimate day of the Festival. - 9:15 AM: bettrends.co.uk Blast from the past: MY WAY DE SOLZEN, who won an Arkle Trophy and a Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival when with Alan King’s stable at Barbury Castle, could be one of the stars at Siddington’s annual point-to-point on Saturday.
- 8:58 AM: bettrends.co.uk Tranquil Sea is following the same path as last year’s Ryanair Chase winner Imperial Commander as he bids for the big Cheltenham prize today.
Both used victory in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at the Prestbury Park track in November as a springboard, and Tranquil Sea has since dropped in trip and won a Grade Two event over two miles one furlong. - 8:51 AM: bettrends.co.uk Early market movers
Dave’s Dream in the opening Jewson Novices Handicap Chase (1.30pm) is 10s from 12s with Blue Square, VC Bet and Ladbrokes.
Albertas Run – Ryanair Chase at 2.40pm 20s down to 12/1 with Ladbrokes.
Karabak and Katchit in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle now 8/1 from 9s and 16s from 18s with Ladbrokes and Sportingbet respectively. - 8:51 AM: Paul Jones At those percentages you will become rich men
- 8:47 AM: bettrends.co.uk It’s 3/1 walk the course; 1/10 fry up!
- 8:46 AM: Paul Jones Also said Reve De Sivola has 2m4f novice chases on agenda next year. Think he reckons 3m would stretch him so do not be suckered into an RSA Chase bet
- 8:44 AM: Paul Jones Had a chat with Nick Williams. Says Diamond Harry will go hcap chasing next season so seems resigned to fact he is short of top class
- 8:42 AM: Paul Jones I can’t envisage defeat for Big Buck’s. Time For Rupert and Katchit ew without the fav for me in the big race
- 8:38 AM: Paul Jones Contemplating whether to walk the New Course or have a massive fry up
- 8:37 AM: bettrends.co.uk Meant generally PJ for the meeting – great work with the Ante-Post Service
- 8:36 AM: Paul Jones It’s not been a bloodbath for the Ante Post service! Definite bloodbath for trends horses and favourite backers though
- 8:35 AM: Paul Jones Just watched the Coral Cup again. Silverhand was cruising until he had to hurdle the fallen Wishfull Thinking 2 out and ended his chance. He is a Flat horse basically and would be of massive if interest if he runs in the 2m4f handicap at Aintree especially as J P McManus has won that race five times in theast 12 years.
- 8:34 AM: bettrends.co.uk Morning PJ – bright & early today. Will the blood bath finally subside today?
- 8:30 AM: Paul Jones Having had a lumpy ante post bet on Enterprise Park for the Albert Bartlett I am far from happy to hear Quel Esprit may also run for the same yard as fear Ruby will ride. I am hoping they have second thoughts!
