F1 – Turkish Grand Prix Preview
All eyes will be on Mark Webber in the Turkish Grand Prix as the Red Bull driver looks to complete a hat-trick of victories following back-to-back wins in Spain and Monaco, the latter earning us a nice 11/2 winner each-way.
If the bookmakers have it right, we will once again be seeing a dominant performance with Webber the 5/2 second favourite for victory in Istanbul behind team-mate Sebastian Vettel, who is the 7/4 market leader. Despite Webber being the in-form driver of the pair, it is hard to split their chances and the better bet might be to go heavy on the 1/2 about the winning car being a Red Bull one – particularly as it pays better than ditching the two drivers in the outright market.
As far as I can see, the rest of the field will be playing for third place at best and therefore the market for a podium finish interests me. Fernando Alonso has stood on the podium in three of the five Turkish Grand Prix since its introduction to the calendar in 2005 and, on a circuit where his Ferrari team have won three of the five races, is worth backing at 11/8 with Ladbrokes.
Robert Kubica has been impressive this season for Renault, finishing on the podium twice and in the top five in four of the six Grand Prix so far. Once again he is behind the drivers of the big four teams in the market, but the 6/4 on offer with Blue Square and 888Sport about him finishing in the top six once again is too good to resist.
Retirements in the Turkish Grand Prix have been few and far between in the five years of the race to date and Bwin’s offer of 11/10 that there will be over 18.5 finishers this year is another bet that interests me. In the last three years, just six drivers have failed to complete the race and, with 24 starters on the grid this season, there is every likelihood 19 drivers or more will go the distance.
BETTRENDS ADVICE
Red Bull to be the winning car – 1/2 (general)
Fernando Alonso – to be on the podium – 11/8 (Ladbrokes)
Robert Kubica – to be in the top six – 6/4 (Blue Square and 888Sport)
Over 18.5 finishers – 11/10 (Bwin)
