F1 – Canadian Grand Prix Preview

All eyes will be on Red Bull in Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, which returns to the Formula One calendar after a year’s absence, as the team look to put the calamitous collision between drivers Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel in Turkey two weeks ago firmly behind them.

With Webber leading and Vettel attempting to pass him in Turkey, the pair collided to cost Red Bull another likely one-two finish and a clear lead in the world championship. Webber recovered to finish third behind Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button to retain his own lead in the drivers’ standings but the shock one-two for McLaren put them on top in the constructors’ race.

That victory for Hamilton has resulted in him being made favourite to win the Canadian Grand Prix, the first time either of the Red Bull drivers have been deposed at the head of the markets this season. The former world champion is the 5/2 market leader ahead of Vettel (3/1) and Webber (4/1).

In the two visits he has paid to Canada in Formula One in 2007 and 2008, Hamilton has qualified on pole on both occasions and turned one of those into victories, the other occasion seeing him exit the race on the opening lap after a collision. On past performances at the track, it is therefore easy to see why he is favourite.

But Hamilton’s victory in Turkey flattered him a little as, for me, Red Bull would have won the race through Vettel, who was going much quicker than his team-mate when the collision happened. After being outqualified three successive times and behind Webber, who was chasing a third straight win in Turkey, Vettel had a point to prove. And at 3/1 he looks good value to get back to winning ways in what is the quickest car on the track.

The Red Bull car has proven unbeatable is qualifying this season and there seems little value in opposing them. Vettel and Hamilton are joint-favourites to be on pole position but Webber represents the best value at 7/2 when you consider he has been at the head of the grid in four of the last five Grands Prix.

The Canadian Grand Prix, the only round of the championship in North America, often throws up some unusual results with outsiders getting in the frame for points. In Turkey, Sauber looked to be turning the corner after a disastrous start to the season and the 3/1 on offer with Sky Bet and Boylesports about the talented Kamui Kobayashi finishing in the top-10 for the second race running looks decent value.

BETTRENDS ADVICE

Sebastian Vettel – to win Grand Prix – 3/1 (general)

Mark Webber – to qualify on pole position – 7/2 (general)

Kamui Kobayashi – to finish in the points – 3/1 (Sky Bet and Boylesports)
