Sadly for followers of James Cochrane’s expert golf advice there won’t be an update this week owing to James’ absence from bettrends HQ.

However what this does allow is for us to take a brief look back on last week’s US Open from Pebble Beach. Graeme McDowell put his nerves to one side to land his first major by one shot from France’s Gregory Havret. It was a tremendous achievement from McDowell who came into the event having won the Welsh Open at Celtic Manor two weeks before and ended Europe’s 40-year US Open drought.

In a jittery final round all players were dropping shots and it was the solid front 9 that really sealed the championship for McDowell. Followers of Bettrends golf advice were sitting pretty entering the final round with 40/1 shot Dustin Johnson leading the field by 3 shots. His fate was sealed early with a disastrous opening few holes which saw him drop shots on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th and left his US Open hopes in tatters.

For McDowell though, priced at 80/1 at the start of the tournament, he was in the right position to capitalise and all roads now lead to St Andrews for The Open next month.
